Richard's Notes

I didn't quite understand a friend, Bay Street Lawyer, who got a place in St. Mary's, Ontario, and commute for two hours each way when he has to be back in town for the Heritage Society's meeting once in a while.  Most of the time, he "hotels" in his condominium pied-à-terre when he puts in 16 hour days during the week.

Still, I can't say that I would understand the commute to St. Mary's - nice town but not that much different a feel with other communities in Ontario.  I can travel to Northumberland - Port Hope, Cobourg for half the time and have even more history and activities.  My friend is a canoeist.  He enjoys walking his canoe to the river.

The landscapes leading to the Home is like an undulating seascape of white - almost blends into the white clouds on the horizon seamlessly, giving it the "edge of the earth" feel.  I can imagine the Spring Summer fields of rolling greens in contrast with white clouds and blue skies.  So serene.  On my return to the city, I see clusters of tiny black figures in different intersections - they are the Mennonite children probably returning home from school - we are in the heart of Mennonite Country.

The Home is "handsome" with its generous use of wood and flushed with sun light on three levels (including the full basement).  Totally gutted with new windows and restored with original wood work about 15 years ago by the direct descendant of the Inglis family.  (I understand Mr. Inglis has relocated to a different region because of work.)  I like the 10' ceilings, the oak wainscoting, windows and entrance frames/arches, and generally what he has done with the renovation.  He added an approximately 945 sq.ft. Great Room extension with floor-to-ceiling Stone Fireplace and a 6 person whirlpool tub with cedar framed ambient lighting and skylight above together with a cedar lined sauna & shower.  He also finished the basement, clearing a height of approximately 7' 1¼" ceiling, with another approximately 460 sq.ft. with a Wood Stove (Brick Skirt) and a Guest Bedroom where he access the temperature controlled Wine/Cold Cellar. The whole house is wired with Nutone Speakers for Music.   I can see quality throughout in the workmanship.  One thing I cannot ascertain is the repeat of "balls" on the railing and the dental work in the porch.  Quite unique, but I cannot ascertain the philosophy behind the design.

The bathrooms are quite "handsome" too, although the current owner pointed out that the shower in the 6 PC Bathroom upstairs is a hit with the ladies.  The Second Floor Landing is wide enough for him to create a Study at the end next to the windows.  There is a semi finished attic - wall-to-wall carpet floor with a cedar closet and chest for extra storage accessed via fold down stairs near the Study.

Notes on The Region

The nearest hamlet is Clifford, with ample Restaurants and a Golf ClubHowick Township is primarily Mennonite Country with breathtaking rolling landscape and offers quiet solitudes for those yearning a respite from the city buzz.
