Richard's Notes

The History

Collingwood Township has had a fascinating life in the past 146 years.  Prominent figures were Irishman Charles Rankin, who surveyed every other concession line and crossroad in less than 50 days and William Jabez Marsh, who acquired the site of Clarksburg and set the stage for the Clark and Tyson mills that created the village.

The single most important fact of the township's prosperity has been the proliferation and success of the apple orchards.  In 1835, James Carson on an exploratory trip came by water from Mono Township, recorded in his diary:  level land for farming, which with its shore front and sheltered by the hills behind, would be safe from late and early frosts, and would be an ideal spot for fruit growing.  James R. Gowan, who passed through Collingwood Township in the winter of 1847, went on to explain that it is a misconception that the winters here are more severe than they are further south or east.

The type of soil is the second important factor in successful fruit production.  Sandy loam and silty clay material left by t he glacial age are found in this area directly to the south of the bay.  These soils provide good drainage and a good base for tree growth.  By the 1880's apple orchards of some size were becoming established in various parts of the township.
